Description
ARTICHOKE, Cynara scolymus Gros Vert de Laon Green
A magnificent, highly decorative perennial that can be used as a vegetable, ornamental and herb. Initially, it forms a rosette of leaves up to 120 cm long, from which grows an inflorescence shoot up to 120-150 cm. At the top of the main and side shoots, inflorescences are formed – baskets 10-12 cm in diameter with a fleshy flower bottom and thick covering leaves. They are eaten cooked, just like asparagus. Fresh, dried artichoke leaves have choleretic, diuretic and antiatherosclerotic properties.
Sowing seeds in March in pots with a diameter of 8-10 cm. At 16-20 ° C, emergence takes place after 2-3 weeks. In mid-May, the seedlings are planted in a permanent place at a spacing of 1 x 1 m. In order to obtain good-quality flower baskets, only 6-8 flower buds should be left on the plant in the second year. We harvest in the second half of the summer, when the baskets are not yet fully developed. Cover the plants with straw or leaves before winter. Grow in a sunny place in a fertile, moist soil.
